Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang receives US congressional delegation

Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang highly appreciated the visit of Senator Jeff Merkley and the US parliamentary delegation, emphasizing that it would be an important activity, opening door to foreign cooperation programs and events between the Vietnamese National Assembly and US Congress in the coming time.

The visit was of significance, especially in the context that the two countries are actively expanding cooperation activities towards the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership in 2023, the host said.

Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang stated that, over the past time, the relationship between the two countries has seen new and more comprehensive developments. 

Vietnam always considers the US as one of its top partners, and wishes to strengthen the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership in all bilateral and multilateral channels on the basis of respect for each other's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political institutions, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and prosperity in the region, the Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Public Security.

At the same time, security and law enforcement cooperation between Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security and US relevant agencies (such as the National Security Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior of the United States) was bolstered in depth, and achieved many positive results. 

Through this cooperation channel, the two sides have exchanged high-level messages and strategic information, shared information on crime, supported each other in arresting wanted criminals as well as cooperated with each other in technology transfer and capacity building.

In order to expand cooperation between the two countries and achieve more fruitful results, Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang suggested that Senator Jeff Merkley and the US congressional delegation will have a voice in support of the Vietnam - US relations, strengthen bilateral cooperation, exchange and share strategic information on international and regional issues of mutual concern.

The host also suggested that the two sides early sign an agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, an agreement on extradition, and an agreement on the transfer of imprisoned persons in order to create a legal framework and contribute to strengthening cooperation in the field of law enforcement. 

Regarding the cooperation between the law enforcement forces of the two countries, he suggested strengthening the exchange of information, cooperating in investigating, apprehending and handing over runaway criminals to their home country for trial, in l1ental principles of international law.

Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang also expressed hope that the US side will further support the Vietnamese side in improving its law enforcement capacity, modernizing its security and defense equipment, applying high technology in criminal investigation, rescue, and emergency response, and training officers of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in specialized skills and foreign languages.

Sincerely thanking Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang for the warm welcome, Senator Jeff Merkley pledged that he will make practical contributions to strengthening the Viettnam-US relationship, for the benefits and aspirations of the two peoples.
