Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long praises Lai Chau Provincial Police Department for dismantling transnational cybercrime group

PSNews - Deputy Minister of Public Security Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Long sent a letter of commendation to the Lai Chau Provincial Police Department, praising the police department for dismantling a criminal group cheating people out of their property in cyberspace, on January 5th, 2024.

The content of the letter has been translated into English as follows:

In recent times, the Lai Chau Provincial Police Department, in coordination with under-ministerial police departments and Cambodian law enforcement forces, has investigated and successfully dismantled a criminal gang based in Bavet City, Svay Rieng Province, Cambodia. The gang has defrauded people of their money in cyberspace.

By now, the police have arrested 18 Vietnamese suspects, 12 of whom were arrested in Cambodia.

The initial investigation results revealed that the gang had defrauded 52 out of the total 200 victims across 29 localities in Vietnam of 3.95 billion VND.

Although the Lai Chau Police had faced numerous difficulties and challenges as the gang was based in Cambodia and its operation was in cyberspace, they, with their strong determination, good professional expertise and a high sense of responsibility, have successfully stamped out the criminal network, which had been based in a foreign country, making use of cyberspace and high technology to defraud people at home of their assets, in accordance with the directions of the Public Security Central Party Committee and the leadership of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

The clearing of the case has contributed to avoiding thousands of other people being at risk of cyber fraud, as well as deterring organized criminal groups, fostering good relationships between the law enforcement forces of Vietnam and Cambodia, and reinforcing the Vietnamese people's trust in the Party, the State, and the Public Security Forces.

On behalf of the Public Security Central Party Committee and MPS leaders, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long praised the Lai Chau Provincial Police Department and involved public security units for their excellent achievements.

The Deputy Minister requested the Lai Chau Provincial Police Department to closely coordinate with relevant public security units and agencies to expand investigation of the case and early complete documents and evidence so as to prosecute all the offenders in line with the laws.

The Deputy Minister also urged the police department to further promote the success of the case to create high motivation in attacking and suppressing cybercrime, contributing to increasing people’s vigilance against cyber fraud.

The Public Security Central Party Committee and MPS leaders wished that the Lai Chau Provincial Police Department would achieve more excellent achievements in crime prevention and control and intensify the campaign to attack and suppress all types of crime to ensure security and order for the 2025 Lunar New Year, contributing to reducing crime and gradually building a safe and healthy society for the sake of national security and a peaceful and happy life for the people.
