Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long visits Cambodian National Information Technology Center

PSNews - Deputy Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Long, leading a high-ranking delegation of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam, visited and had a working session with Senior Minister Chhay Sinarith, Director of the National Information Technology Center and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Commission for Combating Online Scams of Cambodia, on the afternoon of October 29 in Phnom Penh.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long emphasized that the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and Cambodian law enforcement agencies have closely coordinated in investigating and dismantling several major criminal cases, successfully rescuing numerous victims.

In addition, the Cambodian side handed over to Vietnam thousands of Vietnamese citizens who had been deceived and become forced laborers at entertainment service establishments owned by foreign nationals in Cambodia.

Given the increasingly complex online scams in the coming period, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long stressed that both sides should effectively implement the agreements reached by the two countries’ senior leaders, as well as international treaties and multinational cooperation mechanisms to which both nations are parties, particularly the Hanoi Convention signed on October 25.

The guest also proposed that the two sides establish a hotline to exchange information and promptly address online scam cases involving citizens of each country.

He further suggested that the Cambodian Commission for Combating Online Scams advise the Cambodian Government to amend and supplement legal documents related to the prevention of high-tech and online fraud crimes to create a comprehensive legal framework to effectively combat these offenses in the current context.

He also recommended strengthening regulations on the management of foreign businesses operating in Cambodia, as well as conducting regular inspections of residential areas and buildings with foreign occupants to detect and handle cases of illegal immigration, residency, or  signs of legal violations of enterprises.

Agreeing on Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long’s views, Minister Chhay Sinarith affirmed that, in his capacity as Permanent Vice Chairman of the Cambodian Commission for Combating Online Scams, he would actively advise the Cambodian Government and direct relevant functional units to rapidly complete a legal framework, strengthen domestic management and coordinate closely with the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam to combat online fraud.
