Enhancing cooperation in drug combat in Sub-Mekong Region

PSNews- On May 10, the Ministerial Meeting on Co-operation in Combat of Narcotic Drugs in the Mekong sub-region opened in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with the participation of representatives from 6 Mekong sub-region countries namely Laos, Cambodia , Thailand, Myanmar, China and Vietnam, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Son, Deputy Minister of Public Security.

The meeting, part of the 1993 Agreement on drug prevention cooperation between the six Mekong Sub-region countries and UNODC, is held every two years. This year's conference focused on reviewing and evaluating the MOU cooperation mechanism; discussing solutions to raise the effectiveness of coordination of regional drug prevention efforts; reviewing and evaluating the illegal production, sale, transportation and use of narcotics; mapping out and seeking consensus on a fund-raising plan for the next phase.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Son has handed over the chairmanship to the host country of Cambodia and delivered a speech to highlight Vietnam's policies and results in drug prevention. He also highly appreciated the results of anti-narcotic cooperation of Mekong sub-region countries in the past 25 years, contributing to ensuring security and order and promoting socio-economic development in member countries.

He also affirmed that Vietnam always seriously implement its commitments and agreements, and strives for common goals of the region, for regional peace, stability, prosperity and building a drug-free area.
