Exciting Wrestling Festival in Thua Thien – Hue

PSNews – The traditional wrestling festival was held on February 21-2 (or January 6 of the Lunar calendar) in Thu Le village, Sia town, Quang Dien district, Thua Thien – Hue to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Thousands of local people and tourists arrived at the ground of Thu Le village communal house early in the morning to enjoy the event. After the ceremonial ritual, exciting wrestles officially started with the participation of nearly 100 wrestlers in different age categories from communes of Quang Dien district and neighbouring localities.

All wrestlers came to the wrestling arena with their martial spirit.

Under the traditional rules, a wrestler has to defeat 3 competitors to pass the first round. When one wrestled down the other to the ground in the way that his back touches the ground for a while, he will win the competition.

The wrestling festival was first organized hundreds of years ago, according to seniors of the village. In the Nguyen Dynasty, the festival was held to choose strong young men to join the army and protect the country. The wrestling festival has been preserved till today as a fine cultural tradition to celebrate the lunar new year in the hope of health and peace.
