
Among the dead are 881 buffaloes and cows, 129 goats and other cattle.
Son La province was the hardest hit, with 393 cattle heads, followed by Hoa Binh and Lang Son provinces with 171 and 145 heads of cattle.
The cold spell hit the northern region last weekend, causing temperatures in mountainous provinces to drop to as low as three degrees Celsius.
In some higher mountainous areas, temperatures fell to below zero degrees due to the onset of frost. These harsh weather conditions are forecast to last for several days, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.
Local residents have therefore been warned to take measures in order to shelter animals and protect their crops amid freezing temperatures.
