Funeral held for policeman dying while conducting search and rescue mission

The Provincial Police Department of Quang Tri solemnly held a funeral ceremony on October 26 for Captain Truong Van Thang, 31, communal police officer at Huong Viet commune, Huong Hoa district, who died while participating in a search and rescue mission.

General To Lam, Politburo Member and Minister of Public Security, sent his condolences to the deceased police officer’s family. 

The funeral saw the attendance of leaders and representatives from the Quang Tri provincial leadership, the Ministry of Public Security’s Mobile Police Command, and the Military Zone 4 Command as well as thousands of local people.   

Captain Thang took part in a search operation for 7 missing people due to the recent flood and landslide in Huong Viet commune. During the search, Thang and his teammates were hit by a flash flood in couple with a landslide. Captain Thang was buried by the landslide and later found dead while a border guard officer and a local official were injured. At present 4 other members of the search and rescue team are still missing.

State President Nguyen Phu Trong signed a decision on October 20 to posthumously award the second-class Fatherland Protection Order to Captain Thang. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on October 22 decided to honor Thang with the “Merit Recognition” certificate. The Youth Central Committee posthumously awarded the “Brave Youth” title to Captain Thang. 

The burial service of Thang took place on the afternoon of October 26.
