Half of the people in Pa Hoc might have died if Sua had not urged them to evacuate

PSNews – Thao Van Sua, Chief of the Nhi Son Commune Police Post in Muong Lat district, Thanh Hoa province would not have died if he had not come back to the flood-prone place to knock on the door of each home, urging every villager in Pa Hoc to evacuate before the flash flood came. He bravely sacrificed his life saving dozens of people.

“Sua came back to the village urging us to move to Nhi Son commune’s cultural house during storm Wipha. He first evacuated his wife and children as an example and asked us to follow him. On August 3’s night, while he came back to recheck people in flood and landslide-prone areas, the man was swept away by a fierce flash flood.

If he had not come and call on the people at risk to move away, half of the people in Pa Hoc village might have died,” Ha Van Su, 78, residing in Pa Hoc village, Nhi Son commune, Muong Lat district said to the PSNews on August 7.

Su’s house was one of the 8 houses that were totally destroyed during storm Wipha. However, the 78-year-old man and his family have remained safe as they had moved to his relative’s home before the flooding.  Su said his family and many Pa Hoc villagers were able to move to safe places, thanks to Sua.

Pa Hoc village is one of the localities that were hard hit by recent storm Wipha. More than 90 households from the total of 121 households in Pa Hoc village risked landslides. From August 2, Sua and his teammates mobilized each Pa Hoc villager to move to safe places or to the Nhi Son commune’s primary school and cultural house to avoid the storm and related disasters.

At 19h30 on August 3, while rechecking landslide-prone residential places near Nhi Son Primary School in Ba Hoc village, Sua was swept away by a strong flash flood.

The search efforts were obstructed by heavy downpours and landslides. Finally, Sua’s body was found on the morning of August 4. On August 6, Sua’s funeral was held solemnly by the local authorities, police and his family. As Sua's house was swept away by the flood, the funeral took place at his brother’s house.

Representatives of Nhi Son commune, Muong Lat district and many other units visited and gave condolences to Sua's family. Sua’s sacrifice for safety of the people was also recognized and praised by people in the locality and across the country.

On August 7, a charity mission of the Public Security Information and Communications Department, led by Senior Colonel Tran Thanh Phong, the Department’s Deputy Director and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the PSNews visited and presented gifts worth 60 million VND to Sua’s family. Earlier, the PSNews raised fund among its staff and readers in support of Sua’s family.

According to Luong Van Xich, Chairman of the Nhi Son Communal People’s Committee, the locality is seeking a safe place to build a house for Sua’s family.

Earlier, on August 4, General To Lam, Minister of Public Security sent a letter of condolences to Sua’s family. In the letter, Minister To Lam praised officer Sua for his high sense of responsibility, underlining that officer Sua demonstrated the qualities of the police officer who is ready to sacrifice himself for happiness and a peaceful life of the people.

On August 5, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs proposed Thanh Hoa provincial authorities and relevant agencies to complete documents on Sua’s service to submit them to the Government for consideration and recognition of Sua as a martyr.

On August 6, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee decided to posthumously award the "Brave Youth" title to the late Chief of the Nhi Son Commune Police Post.
