Hanoi police praised for busting wire fraud targeting foreigners

In the letter, the Prime Minister praised the capital police for their recent investigation of an online criminal ring that cheated US citizens out of 5,000 US$.

The event saw the presence of Senior Lieutenant General Le Quy Vuong, Member of the Party Central Committee and Deputy Minister of Public Security, and Mr. Le Hong Son, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi Municipal People's Committee.

According to the letter of the Prime Minister, recognizing US people’s huge demand for medical stuffs amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of Vietnamese created hundreds of fake websites offering medical supplies, particularly face-masks on famous US-based online shopping sites.

With the information provided by the US authorities, the Ministry of Public Security directed the Hanoi municipal police to investigate the case. After some time, the police uncovered that from March to July 2020, the criminals have appropriated about USD 900,000 from thousands of US citizens.

The case is currently further investigated by the police.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc hailed the achievements of the Ministry of Public Security in general and the Hanoi police in particular in protecting political stability as well as social safety and order.

At the ceremony, under the authority of the Prime Minister, Deputy Minister Le Quy Vuong handed the Prime Minister's letter of commendation to representatives of the Hanoi Municipal Police Department. He also presented awards from the Ministry of Public Security to the Hoang Mai District Police Station and the Division of Cyber ​​Security and Hi-Tech Crimes under the Hanoi Municipal Police Department for their excellent achievements in investigating the case.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister Le Quy Vuong asked the Hanoi police to urgently coordinate with the US functional forces to collect sufficient evidence in order to prosecute the suspects in accordance with the laws. They should also warn the people at home and abroad against online frauds when conducting commercial transactions on the cyberspace.
