Hospitals in Hanoi overcrowded with dengue patients

PSNews-As many as 9,000 dengue patients currently hospitalized and the increased number of new cases in the past two weeks show that the situation of dengue remains complex in Hanoi.

Various hospitals in Hanoi have been overloaded with dengue patients. They have arranged more space for dengue treatment but the situation has not been improved much. Two or three patients still have to share a bed at hospitals.

At the Infectious Diseases Department of Bach Mai Hospital, the number of patients with dengue fever continues to increase with some pregnant cases requiring special care. According to Dr. Do Duy Cuong - Dean of Infectious Diseases, the current number of patients with dengue accounts for about 30% of the total number of inpatients  while the number of pregnant women with dengue represents about 15 to 20% of the total number of dengue patients in the ward.

In another development, Thanh Nhan hospital has to receive some 300 patients with dengue fever every day, excluding some 500 dengue cases under treatment at the hospital.

According to Nguyen Thi Lan Huong - Deputy Director of Thanh Nhan Hospital, the hospital has only 600 beds, but it now has to arrange more than 1,000 beds to serve the need of patients. However, the hospital faces various difficulties in meeting the huge demand due to a three-fold number of patients compared with the same period last year. A large number of patients treated in Thanh Nhan hospital are from Hai Ba Trung and Hoang Mai Districts, two of the most severely affected areas by dengue in Hanoi.

Since the dawn of the epidemic, the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases has had to receive a huge number of patients with dengue. These days, the hospital has to set up five specialized clinics for dengue patients, increase doctors' working hours, organize medical examinations for patients from 7 am to 5 pm. All of its medical staff are mobilized to work through weekends to fight the epidemic.

The Pediatric Department of Bach Mai Hospital often receives about 20 or 30 children with dengue on average, but sometimes, the figure can go up to 50 with 2 or 3 hospitalized cases.

Doctor Nguyen Thanh Nam, Department of Pediatrics of Bach Mai Hospital said that cases of dengue hospitalized are mainly due to continuous high temperature, and for some cases even paracetamols do not take effect. Doctors warn that parents should not treat their children ignorantly by making their children take some medicines. They are advised to take their children to hospital when their children have signs of dengue, particularly high temperature.

Health experts predict that in the coming time, the dengue epidemic will continue to increase. Therefore, how to control the situation and reduce the number of deaths is a big headache for the health sector.
