Major economic cases brought to light in 2019

A series of major economic, corruption and smuggling cases have been investigated over the past year by the Economic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), contributing to cementing people's confidence in the struggle against corruption and negative signs.

The successful investigation of the economic cases has also reaffirmed the Party and State’s spirit of “no restricted areas in struggle against corruption” of.

The most serious cases include the MobiFone – AVG case; wrongdoings in the second phase of the expansion project of Thai Nguyen Iron and Steel Corporation (Tisco); smuggling case of Nhat Cuong Mobile; smuggling case in Lang Son led by Trinh DucTho; specialized case of using software causing loss of thousands of billions of VND in BOT stations along Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong expressway.

Most recently, the department cracked down on one of the biggest-ever smuggling cases of smuggling large-scale herbal medicines in Lang Son, BacNinh and Ha Noi; a transnational sand smuggling case in the border area of An Giang.

Since the beginning of 2019, the department has proactively developed working plans and take synchronous, drastic and creative measures to prevent and fight against economic crimes, corruption, and smuggling in line with the directions of the Party, the State, the Government and the Ministry of Public Security.

The economic police force has prosecuted 3,436 cases and 4,270 persons related to corruption, economic wrongdoings and smuggling.

They have also focused on recovering the lost assets in economic and corruption cases. For the cases under the supervision of the Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption, the force has gotten back, seized or frozen some 10 thousands billion VND or 70% of the total lost assets.

Fr the achievements, groups and individuals at the department were honored with various titles and medals, including Military Exploit Orders by the State Presidents, Certificates of Merit by the Prime Minister.
