Minister Luong Tam Quang hosts Canadian Ambassador

Minister of Public Security General Luong Tam Quang hosted a meeting with outgoing Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to Vietnam Shawn Steil on the morning of June 27, in Hanoi.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Luong Tam Quang acknowledged and highly appreciated Ambassador Shawn Steil’s active and effective contributions to fostering the cooperation between Vietnam and Canada during his tenure in Vietnam.

Minister Luong Tam Quang affirmed that the Vietnam–Canada Comprehensive Partnership has been flourishing across various fields in recent years.

The host stated that the two countries have cooperated closely in addressing both traditional and non-traditional security issues with a shared vision for a peaceful, stable, secure and sustainable Indo-Pacific region.

He also highly valued the Ambassador and the Canadian Embassy’s role in fostering cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and Canadian law enforcement agencies, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canada Border Services Agency.

The host highlighted positive cooperation outcomes achieved by the two sides in exchanging strategic information, training and building capacity of personnel responsible for immigration management, aviation security, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance and counter-terrorism.

Realizing the two sides’ large potential for cooperation, Minister Luong Tam Quang suggested further exchanging high-level messages, holding policy consultations and regularly sharing information on national security issues, as well as joining efforts to promote a peaceful, stable, open and rule-based international order in the region and the world.

He further proposed strengthening law enforcement cooperation to safeguard the interests and national security of each country.

Minister Luong Tam Quang cited areas of cooperation that both sides have much potential and a high need, such as cybersecurity, peacekeeping force training and modernization of equipment to enhance operational capacity.

For his part, Ambassador Shawn Steil expressed his sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and Minister Luong Tam Quang for effective support and coordination during his term. He vowed to further promoting Vietnam–Canada relations regardless of his future working positions.

The Canadian Ambassador hoped that the two sides would continue to expand their cooperation, especially in the fields of security and law enforcement, contributing to strengthening the comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and Canada in a more substantive, effective and sustainable manner.
