Speaking at the meeting, Minister Luong Tam Quang underlined that, since the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and the Singaporean Ministry of Home Affairs signed an Agreement on Cooperation in Preventing and Combating Transnational Crime in 2018, the cooperation between law enforcement forces of the two countries has been continuously strengthened, and achieved numerous positive results.

Accordingly, the two sides regularly exchanged delegations at all levels to exchange crime information and hands-on experience in crime prevention and control, as well as jointly investigated transnational criminal cases related to citizens of the two countries.

The two sides also consulted and supported each other at multilateral forums in the region and the world, while not allowing any organizations or individuals to utilize one country’s territory to carry out sabotage activities against the other country.

To upgrade the Vietnam-Singapore bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership as soon as possible as agreed by top leaders of the two countries, the Vietnamese Minister pointed out two key factors, namely building political trust and promoting high-level security cooperation between the two sides.

To achieve that goal, Minister Luong Tam Quang suggested that the two sides continue to bring into play the achievements in the Vietnam-Singapore bilateral relations, strengthen political trust through exchanges via all channels, and support each other at ASEAN's forums as well as other multilateral forums.

In addition, the host stressed the need to make security cooperation a core pillar in the Vietnam-Singapore bilateral relations, so that the two countries can jointly respond to common challenges, contributing to safeguarding national security of each country and building a peaceful, stable, cooperative and prosperous ASEAN region.

Overview of the meeting.

The Vietnamese Minister of Public Security proposed that the two sides should enhance exchange of high-level and expert-level delegation in the fields of security and law enforcement and closely coordinate to prevent and combat all types of crime, especially high-tech crime, drug-related crime, human trafficking and economic crime.

The host also suggested that the two sides should step up the negotiation and signing of cooperation documents, such as agreements on extradition and transfer of sentenced persons, saying that it will facilitate the work of preventing and combating transnational crime related to citizens of the two countries.

Agreeing with Minister Luong Tam Quang’s assessments, Singaporean Ambassador Jaya Ratnam believed that the meeting opened many new opportunities to strengthen and develop the relationship between the two countries in general and between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and Singaporean law enforcement agencies in particular.

The Ambassador pledged that, in his working position, he will strive to deepen the Vietnam-Singapore relations in a practical and effective manner, for the development of the two countries and the benefits of the two countries’ people.
