Minister To Lam joins ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Cyber-security 2017

PSNews - As ASEAN came together in the face of a security threat 50 years ago, ASEAN should now work closer together on cyber-security to take full advantage of the fruits of digitalisation.

Senior Lieutenant General To Lam, Minister of Public Security, led a delegation of the Ministry of Public Security to participate in the ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Cyber-security 2017 on September 18, at the invitation of Singapore’s Minister for Communications and Information and Minister-in-charge of Cyber-security Yaacob Ibrahim.

The opening ceremony of the ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Cyber-security 2017 took place on September 18 in Singapore, with the participation of relevant ministers and senior officials from all 10 ASEAN member countries.

The event was also attended by ministers and senior officials from the five dialogue partners of ASEAN, namely the US, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and China.

Delivering the opening speech, Minister Yaacob Ibrahim said, “This year, we commemorate the Golden Jubilee for ASEAN - 50 years of collaboration and cooperation. ASEAN is a credible international organisation, which has contributed to a safe regional security environment. ASEAN is charting a clear path forward, with closer integration under the ASEAN Economic Community, and practical cooperation in new areas.”

In addition, as ASEAN came together in the face of a security threat 50 years ago, ASEAN should now work closer together on cyber-security to take full advantage of the fruits of digitalization.

To effectively cope with cyber-security challenges, Minister Yaacob Ibrahim proposed three measures including domestically pursuing a holistic cyber-security approach; building regional capabilities with the support of ASEAN dialogue partners and strengthening international partnerships.

Minister Yaacob Ibrahim hoped that this conference will be another step to pave the way for another sustained 50 years of growth and development of ASEAN, as a united and cyber-resilient region.

After the opening ceremony, Minister To Lam and the delegation of the Ministry of Public Security joined a special working session themed: “ Challenges in building a safe and stable cyberspace.”
