At the meeting, Minister To Lam and Ambassador Marc Knapper shared the same view that bilateral relations between Vietnam and the United States have been developing rapidly over the past nearly three decades since the normalization of relations.

The two officials also agreed that 2024 is a key year for the two countries to implement cooperation contents within the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership, for peace, cooperation and sustainable development of the two nations.

They also underscored that, In the buildup to the 30th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States (1995 - 2025), agencies and sectors of the two countries should actively implement the contents of bilateral and specialized cooperation between the two sides.

To further promote bilateral relations between Vietnam and the United States in general and the cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security and US partners in particular, Minister To Lam proposed that the two sides continue to cooperate closely to develop specific steps and appropriate and practical cooperation mechanisms to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership agreed by senior leaders of the two countries during US President Joe Biden's recent visit to Vietnam.

Minister To Lam also requested the US side to promote the early signing of an agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, an extradition agreement, and an agreement on transfer of sentenced persons to create a legal framework for cooperation in the field of law enforcement between the two countries as well as to boost bilateral cooperation in the fight against crime.

Thanking Minister To Lam for the meeting, Ambassador Marc Knapper pledged that the US Embassy will continue to coordinate and work closely with functional units of the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security in implementing cooperation contents of mutual interest in line with the contents agreed upon by senior leaders of the two countries in the framework of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.
