PSNews - The Department of Foreign Relations under the Ministry of Public Security in coordination with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) organized a roundtable discussion on online child sexual exploitation and abuse on June 12th - 13th, in Ho Chi Minh city.

The meeting, sponsored by the Japanese Government, was within the framework of the UNODC’s Global Programme on Cybercrime.

The meeting was attended by international delegates from UNODC and UNICEF and representatives from Vietnamese ministries including the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Information and Communication.

During the talk, delegates had in-depth discussions on the current situation of child sexual exploitation and abuse in cyberspace, the legal corridor regarding this issue as well as challenges to the work of protecting children from being sexually abused and exploited in cyberspace.

Experts from UNODC and UNICEF clarified the mission and core pillars of the UNODC’s Global Programme on Cybercrime, updated on results of UNICEF’s research on prevention of child abuse in Vietnam as well as exchanged hands-on experience in investigating and handling cases of online child sexual exploitation and abuse in Spain and Japan.

In Vietnam, the protection of children in cyberspace has been articulated in many legal documents, including the Law on Information Technology, the Law on Cyberinformation Security, the Law on Children and the Law on Cybersecurity.

Notably, the program “Protecting and supporting children to do healthy and creative things in cyberspace in the 2021-2025 period” approved by the Prime Minister has become Vietnam’s first national program of this kind.

Accordingly, the Vietnamese Government has sychoronously launched groups of approaches to promote media education, improve children’s awareness and skills to study and play safely in cyberspace as well as perfect the structure of an organization responsible for protecting children in cyberspace.
