Thanh Hoa’s policemen dead while performing duty in flooded area

PSNews –Thao Van Sua, 33, Chief of the Nhi Son Police Post in Muong Lat district, Thanh Hoa province was killed by a flashflood while inspecting houses at risk of landslides in the locality on August 3.

Thanh Hoa province’s Muong Lat district was one of the localities that were hard hit by recent storm Wipha. At least one person died and 13 others still remain missing as heavy rains triggered by storm Wipha flooded many areas in Thanh Hoa Province.

The storm also caused serious floods and landslides in several mountainous localities, damaging local people’s assets.

Against this backdrop, thousands of police officers of the have been mobilized for rescue missions during the rains, flooding and landslides, as well as for supporting local people in overcoming the consequences.

On August 3’s night, while checking landslide-prone residential places near Nhi Son Primary School in Ba Hoc village, Nhi Son commune, Muong Lat district, Thao Van Sua, Chief of the Nhi Son Police Post was swept away by a strong flash flood.

The search efforts were obstructed by heavy downpours and landslides. Finally, Sua’s body was found on the morning of August 4 and handed over to his family. Representatives of Nhi Son commune, Muong Lat district and many other units visited and gave condolences to Sua's family.

Sua’s sacrifice for safety of the people was also recognized and praised by the people.

Storm Wipha, the third tropical storm to hit Vietnam this year, also caused heavy damage to properties and public transport routes.

The northern mountainous province of Bac Kan reported one death, while the northern mountainous province of Dien Bien reported one 9-year-old boy was dead and a five-year-old boy went missing after the two were swept away by flash flood at the local stream.

Some 100 houses, mostly in Thanh Hoa and Lang Son provinces, were destroyed, and nearly 200 others have been damaged.

Meanwhile, landslides and floods caused blockages in many roads in Thanh Hoa, Dien Bien and Son La provinces, cutting off traffics.

The storm also disrupted electricity supply to nearly 300,000 customers on August 2, but service was restored late the same day.

Military personnel have been deployed to support search and rescue activities and help residents to overcome the consequences of natural disasters, especially in Thanh Hoa.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has directed the supply of 2,860 boxes of instant noodle, 39 boxes of dry food, and drinking water to isolated villages.
