Traffic deaths decline during National Day holidays

The number of deaths and injuries caused by traffic accidents across the country reduced during the National Day holidays from the same period last year, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC).

A total of 83 accidents occurred during the three-day holidays. The accidents claimed 46 lives and injured 53 others, decreases of 12 and 3 in comparison to the same period last year.

On September 3, the last day of the break, there were 33 accidents with 14 fatalities and 32 wounded victims.

Authorised agencies dealt with nearly 16,800 traffic rule violation cases in the reviewed period, seized about 3,062 vehicles and revoked 542 driving licences.

The NTSC’s hotlines received 98 calls and text messages reporting violation cases, mainly on overcrowding, inflated ticket prices on coaches and traffic jams in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and national highways.

Statistics released previously by the NTSC showed that the number of road traffic accidents, traffic-related deaths and injuries in Vietnam dropped in the first eight months of this year, compared with the same period last year.

About 11,782 road accidents were reported nationwide in the reviewed period, killing 5,366 people and injuring about 9,200 others.

The number of traffic accidents was 7.77 percent lower than that of last year, while the number of deaths and injuries dropped by 1.03 percent and 12.66 percent, respectively.

In August alone, there were 1,432 accidents, killing 650 people and wounding 1,094 others, down 10.67 percent, 1.66 percent and 15.72 percent, respectively, against the same period last year.
