Traffic police force offer students vouchers to buy standard helmets

PSNews - The Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security from December 17 to 31 will collaborate with the National Committee on Traffic Safety and Honda Vietnam to present 35,000 vouchers to buy helmets in the country's 10 provinces and cities.

The drive is part of the program to present high quality helmets to first graders nationwide in the 2018-2019 academic year, named "Preserving dreams". The event aims to raise public awareness of abiding by regulations on wearing helmets for children when travelling with their parents on motorcycles.

The organizers will provide 35,000 vouchers, worth 100,000VND each, for students’ parents to buy helmets at Honda Exclusive Authorized Dealer (HEAD) stores nationwide.

The program will be launched in 8 provinces of An Giang, Binh Dinh, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Phu Tho, Yen Bai, Thai Nguyen, Phu Yen, and two major cities of Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh.

About 2,000 Vietnamese children are killed in traffic accidents every year, mainly due to a lack of public awareness of the importance of helmet.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, in 2017, the country witnessed a total of 20,000 accidents, claiming the lives of nearly 8,300 people and injuring 17,000 others.

Over the last five years, the figure of fatalities has shown a gradual downward trend, but still never dropped below 8,000. Vietnam’s traffic fatality rate of 24.5 per 100,000 is Southeast Asia’s second-highest, following Thailand, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). In 2016, the number of deaths even went up by 14 compared to 2015, with most accidents involved motorbikes.
