Tropical depression likely to strengthen into typhoon

A tropical low pressure is entering the East Sea and is likely to strengthen into a typhoon with complicated developments, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Nguyen Van Huong, head of the Climate Forecast Office at the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said from the afternoon of December 29, the tropical depression will enter the East Sea along with a cold air mass, which will cause strong winds leveling at 10 category near the northern area of Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago.

From December 29, there will be strong winds and rough sea in the waters offshore the central and southern provinces.

On December 30, there will be torrential rain in provinces from Quang Binh to Da Nang, and from Quang Nam to Binh Thuan.

From the night of December 28 to 31, there will be floods in rivers from Thua Thien Hue to Khanh Hoa with water levels rising to the alarming levels.

There will be high risks of flash floods, landslides and severe flooding in lowland areas.

Forecasters said in the next two days, the tropical depression is not likely to develop into a typhoon but will become the tenth storm of this year when entering the northern area of Truong Sa archipelago.
