A high-ranking Vietnamese delegation is attending the Regional Anti-Corruption Conference for Law Enforcement Professionals in Southeast Asia on August 29-31 in Bangkok. The event is co-held by the United Nations Office on Crime Prevention and Control (UNODC) for Asia-Pacific, the National Anti-Corruption Commission of Thailand and the Korean Ministry of Justice.

The Vietnamese delegation includes Deputy Minister of Public Security Major General Nguyen Van Long, as the head delegate, representatives from the Government Inspectorate and the Supreme People's Procuracy.

With the participation of more than 200 delegates from 17 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, this meeting is an important event, during which high-ranking delegates from anti-corruption agencies, legal assistance agencies, people’s/public prosecutors of regional countries are expected to discus corruption-related issues, identify challenges and develop orientations to strengthen anti-corruption in the region.

On the first working day, there were three discussion sessions focusing on challenges and anti-corruption work in Southeast Asia; legal enforcement against corruption; and lessons drawn from practices in other regions.

Speaking at the first discussion session, Deputy Minister Long briefed participants on Vietnam’s anti-corruption efforts, noting that the country joined the United Nations Convention Against Corruption in 2009.

From 2011 to June 2022, the Ministry of Public Security investigated nearly 3,000 corruption cases with more than 6,000 people involved, and recovered assets worth some 23 trillion VND (981.43 million USD).

Vietnam has also stepped up international cooperation in anti-corruption. It has signed 23 agreements on judicial assistance and nine memoranda of understanding on money laundering, information exchange and counterterrorism with other countries.

Within the regional framework, Vietnam successfully fulfilled its role as the Chairman of the ASEAN Group of Anti-Corruption Agencies (ASEAN-PAC) from December 2020 to November 2021.

At the conference, the Vietnamese delegation gave practical recommendations to effectively implement the United Nations Convention on Anti-Corruption.

The Vietnamese delegation also asked the United Nations and the international community to continue to support Vietnam in the fight against corruption, such as information sharing, experience exchange, and capacity building of Vietnamese law enforcement officers, equipment for Vietnamese anti-corruption forces, technological transfer.

Vietnam is committed to working closely with other countries and United Nations organizations in the fight against corruption. As an ASEAN member, Vietnam is committed to actively and responsibly participating in the cooperation frameworks of ASEAN in general and the field of anti-corruption in particular.
