Vietnam and Myanmar tighten cooperation on fight against crime

PSNews – The 5th Deputy Ministerial Security Dialogue between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and the Ministry of Home Affairs of Myanmar took place on July 12, in Hanoi. 

Major General Aung Soe, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs of Myanmar, led the host delegation.

Delivering the opening speech, Deputy Minister of Public Security of Vietnam Bui Van Nam stated that the political and security situation in the region and world is changing quickly and unpredictably but poses both opportunities and challenges, strongly impacting the development and stability of countries, especially those in the Asia-Pacific region.

Fortunately, cooperation between Vietnam and Myanmar in general and between the Public Security Ministry of Vietnam and the Home Affairs Ministry of Myanmar in particular has been well maintained and expanded. In this circumstance, the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam was honored to host this dialogue, he said.

He also underscored that the event played a significant role in effectively maintaining cooperation mechanisms between the two sides while hoping that the dialogue’s outcomes will further boost cooperative ties between the Public Security Ministry of Vietnam and the Home Affairs Ministry of Myanmar in the coming time.

At the dialogue, the two sides assessed the implementation of the cooperation plans mapped out at the 4th dialogue in the fields of security, police, Interpol cooperation as well as legal framework building. Additionally, participants also pointed out limitations and shortcomings in the two sides’ sharing information and crime prevention, and discussed non-traditional security threats to national security of each country.

The two sides also approved the orientation for cooperation in the time ahead, including increasing exchange of delegations of all levels, sharing information about core issues relating to security, social order and safety and fight against crimes, particularly drug dealing, terrorism, human trafficking and transnational crimes.

Moreover, the two sides agreed to accelerate negotiations to sign agreements as planned.

The Public Security Ministry of Vietnam expressed delight at handing over the chair of the 6th dialogue in 2018 to the Ministry of Home Affairs of Myanmar.
