Vietnam, Indonesia strengthen law enforcement cooperation

Welcoming Minister Luong Tam Quang to the Indonesian National Police Headquarters, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo said that the relationship between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and the Indonesian National Police had been continuously strengthened in a practical and effective manner, especially following the signing of the Protocol amending the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia on Crime Prevention and Control on the sidelines of the 17th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC 17) held in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia, in August 2023.

The Indonesian Police Chief hoped that the two sides' functional units will continue to enhance bilateral cooperation in a practical, effective and substantive manner, further deepening the Indonesia-Vietnam strategic partnership.

Speaking at the talks, Minister Luong Tam Quang noted that the security and law enforcement cooperation is a crucial pillar in Vietnam-Indonesia relations.

During the talks, the two sides highlighted key results of their cooperation.

Accordingly, the two sides enhanced delegation exchanges at all levels, regularly shared criminal information through diplomatic channels, INTERPOL and ASEANAPOL, as well as cooperated in training, capacity-building and competency assessments of police peacekeepers while supporting each other's initiatives at multilateral forums.

To further promote bilateral cooperation in the coming time, the two head delegates stressed the need to strengthen coordination between the two sides to firmly safeguard national security of each country, maintain social order and safety as well as peace and prosperity for each people, while increasing high-level delegation exchanges to actively convey messages from the two countries' leaders to each other.

The two sides also committed to enhancing information sharing on issues of mutual concerns, particularly cybercrime, drug-related crimes, human trafficking, smuggling and trade fraud, through both bilateral and multilateral mechanisms, including AMMTC/SOMTC, INTERPOL and ASEANAPOL.

Additionally, the two police forces need to strengthen cooperation in investigating, combating and dismantling transnational criminal networks; conducting joint investigations, arresting fugitive criminals and extraditing sentenced persons, contributing to effectively preventing violations of the laws and ensuring social order and safety in each country.

They also agreed to create favorable condition and ensure safety and security of citizens of one country residing, studying, and working in the other country.

Furthermore, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to preventing any individuals or organizations from taking advantage of one country’s territory to undermine the other’s national security.

Finally, both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in combating illegal fishing and ensuring human treatment toward fishermen violating each country's territorial waters.
