Vietnam, Laos agree to strengthen cooperation in combating crime

Within the framework of the official visit to Lao PDR at the invitation of Lao Member of the Politburo, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security General Vilay Lakhamphong and to attend the 18th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime, Member of the Politburo and Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General Luong Tam Quang, leading a high-ranking delegation of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam (MPS), had talks with a high-ranking delegation of the Lao Ministry of Public Security headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security Vilay Lakhamphong, on the afternoon of August 27th, in Vientiane.

At the talks, the two sides reviewed and evaluated results of bilateral cooperation between the two sides since the beginning of the year.

Accordingly, public security forces of the two countries have closely coordinated with each other to ensure political security, prevent and fight sabotage activities by hostile and reactionary forces, while regularly exchanging information on international and regional terrorism activities affecting national security of the two countries as well as teaming up to ensure security and order along the shared Vietnam – Laos borderline.

Regarding cooperation in crime prevention and control, the two sides have regularly exchanged information about drug-related crimes, human trafficking, high-tech crimes and other types of crime related to citizens of the two countries, while actively cooperating in combating and suppressing all types of crime and law violations.

To further promote bilateral cooperation in the coming time, the two public security ministers agreed to continue to effectively implement signed cooperation documents, enhance the exchange of information and situation related to national security of each country.

The two ministers requested that two sides’ public security forces should proactively coordinate to prevent and combat all plots and sabotage activities by hostile, reactionary and terrorist forces, jointly ensure security and safety for ASEAN's meetings and events in Laos in 2024 as well as other major political events in the two countries and protect security and order along the shared borderline.

The two ministries also reached consensus on not allowing hostile forces to employ one country’s territory to carry out sabotage activities against the other country, as well as creating favorable conditions for one country’s citizens living, working and studying in the other country, contributing to socio-economic development of both countries.

The two sides also agreed to promote cooperation in preventing and combating organized crimes, transnational crimes, especially drug-related crimes, human trafficking, smuggling, money laundering and environmental crimes, while enhancing the work of training and capacity building of public security officers of the two countries and strengthening cooperation in Party building and force building.

At the end of the talks, on behalf of MPS, Minister Luong Tam Quang presented Lao Ministry of Public Security with equipment in support of the work of ensuring security and safety for international events during Lao ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024.
