Vietnam seizes 10 tons of pangolin scales, ivory shipped from Africa

In one of Vietnam’s largest wildlife trafficking busts, authorities of the central city of Danang have seized nearly 10 tonnes of illegally-transported ivory and pangolin scales.

Custom officials at the Tien Sa Port in the central city of Da Nang joined forces with officers from the Ministry of Public Security in the crackdown. They discovered ivory and pangolin scales weighing around 10 tons hidden in a plastic waste container imported from Nigeria.

The smuggled goods were included on the list of species threatened with extinction issued by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The container was sent to the Thien Truong Su Company in Nghe An Province. At the time of inspection, the company failed to provide legal documents to specify the origin and description of the shipment.

The case is under further investigation. In 2015, eight tonnes of ivory, rhino horns and pangolin scales were found in five containers at Tien Sa Port.
