This year’s meeting is expecting the participation of some 1,500 delegates, including ministers in charge of the environment and other senior officials from 183 member countries, along with the leaders of the United Nations’ relevant agencies, banks for regional development, socio-political organizations and businesses. They are expected to discuss ideas, solutions and urgent actions to promote global-scale environmental protection.

Nearly 30 nations have so far pledged to earmark $ 4.1 billion for GEF's 7th Cycle (GEF7) to better protect the future of the planet and human health.

Vietnam's hosting the GEF6 demonstrates its proactive role in the GEF. By hosting the event, Vietnam also wants to confirm that the country is a responsible member of the international community and willing to participate in the common efforts of the international community to protect natural resources and environment, as well as to fully implement the commitments of the Paris Climate Change Agreement and strive for sustainable development goals.

In return, the event will provide an opportunity for Vietnam to strengthen and promote cooperation with partners in both bilateral and multilateral terms, as well as to seek financial and technological supports from partners.

The Global Environment Fund (GEF) was established in 1991 to tackle global warming issues. Since its founding, the GEF has provided $ 14.5 billion in aid and raised $ 75.4 billion for nearly 4,000 environmental projects.

With 183 member states, the GEF is the independent financial institution that provides the world's largest source of public funding for environmental projects.

Vietnam is one of the GEF early-joining country (on December 5, 1994). Since its membership, GEF Vietnam has raised $ 457.18 million for the implementation of 107 environmental projects in a number of sectors and areas, including 56 national projects with a total budget of $ 153.8 million and 47 regional and global projects with total funding $ 294 million, contributing positively to addressing environmental issues in the country and world as a whole.
