Youths of Vinh Long police launch “rice ATM” to support poor locals amid COVID-19 pandemic

Since April 21, the Youth Union Chapter of the Vinh Long Provincial Police Department has put into operation a “rice ATM’ in Vinh Long city to provide free rice for poor locals amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The automatic rice dispenser machine, known as “rice ATM”, was supported by a Ho Chi Minh City-based benefactor and installed at No. 67/5D, Pham Thai Buong Street, Ward 4, Vinh Long city. The automatic rice dispenser identifies people by fingerprints and images from its cameras, and then gives out 3kg bagful of rice to each eligible recipient.

By April 21, the Youth Union Chapter of the Vinh Long Provincial Police Department mobilized over 10 tons of rice from various benefactors to distribute to people in need.

The Vinh Long Provincial Police Youth Union has assigned its police officers to guide needy people who come to receive rice form the machine, as well as ensure safety and order in accordance with the pandemic prevention regulations.

The local police expected to distribute free rice for needy locals in the next 3-5 days at a rate of about 600 bags of rice per day. Additionally, many businesses and organizations also offered foodstuffs, instant noodles, soy sauces and facemasks to people who come to receive rice at the “rice ATM”.
