800 blood units donated by Hanoi policemen

Nearly 1,000 officers and soldiers of the Hanoi Municipal Police on January 14 participated in the blood donation festive day, held by the Hanoi Municipal Police, the Tien Phong (Vanguard) Newspaper and the Central Institute of Blood Transfusion and Hematology, to echo the 9th “Red Sunday” Program in 2017.

Present at the event were Senior Colonel Dao Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Municipal Police; Professor, Doctor Nguyen Anh Tri, Director of the Central Institute of Blood Transfusion and Hematology; and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Tien Phong Newspaper Vu Tien, deputy head of the Organizing Board of the “Red Sunday” 2017 Program.

Addressing the event, Senior Colonel Dao Thanh Hai stated, “The 3rd “Lighting up the voluntary flame – Service for the people” 2017 journey and the blood donation festive day, in response to the “Red Sunday” 2017 Program, are practical and meaningful activities, which aim to celebrate the 87th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (February 3) and Youth Union congresses at all levels.

They also reflect the spirit, responsibility and sentiment of the Hanoi Police’s youths for the community, easing the shortage of blood in curing patients during the lunar New Year festival (Tet) 2017. Therefore, I hope that the blood donated by officers and soldiers of the Hanoi Municipal Police will bring a happy Tet to patients, and in part will relieve their pains.”

According to Professor, Doctor Nguyen Tri Anh, the need for blood during the 2017 Tet will increase sharply, and there will be thousands of patients nationwide cannot go home to enjoy this Tet with their families as there will be little of blood for them to be transfused in the long Tet holiday season. Even though nationwide hospitals and medical institutions have made great efforts to store blood, it is unlikely to collect some 125,000 blood units, an estimated amount of blood needed for treatment during the holiday season.

After the event, the organizers collected nearly 800 blood units.
