Deputy Minister Pham The Tung visits U.S. National Security Council

PSNews - As part of his working visit to the United States, Deputy Minister Lieutenant General Pham The Tung, leading a delegation of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam, had a working session with a delegation of the U.S. National Security Council, headed by Senior Director for Asia Ivan Kanapathy, on May 20 (local time), in Washington, D.C.

At the working session, Deputy Minister Pham The Tung stated that the Vietnam – U.S. bilateral relationship has witnessed remarkable developments over the past three decades since the normalization, with the most notable milestone being the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023.

The guest underscored that security and law enforcement cooperation became a bright spot in the overall bilateral relationship, serving as an effective and timely channel for the two sides to exchange strategic policies, viewpoints and key messages of the two countries' leaders, and bringing practical benefits to the two nations.

During the meeting, Deputy Minister Pham The Tung suggested that the U.S. National Security Council continue to play a constructive role in reinforcing mutual trust and advancing shared interests between the two countries.

In particular, he proposed that the council join the Vietnamese side’s efforts to make careful preparation for the scheduled high-level visits in 2025, especially a visit to Vietnam by President Donald Trump to Vietnam, and a visit to the U.S. by General Secretary To Lam and a visit to the U.S. by President Luong Cuong.

Regarding, he suggested promoting security and law enforcement cooperation in a substantive manner between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and the U.S. National Security Council through a strategic dialogue mechanism, with a focus on cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, combating transnational crime and human trafficking.

He also expressed Vietnam’s interest in an access to advanced U.S. security technologies and transfer of dual-use technologies that serve both national security–defense and socio-economic development purposes.

The Deputy Minister reaffirmed Vietnam’s goodwill and cooperative spirit and proposed that both sides continue to coordinate effectively to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of their respective citizens.

For his part, U.S. National Security Council’s Senior Director for Asia Ivan Kanapathy highly appreciated positive cooperation results between the two sides in security and law enforcement over the past time, reaffirming that security cooperation remains a priority in the Trump administration’s relationship with Vietnam.

Agreeing with the key cooperation orientations proposed by Deputy Minister Pham The Tung, Mr. Ivan Kanapathy reaffirmed the U.S.  National Security Council’s commitment to further enhancing high-level exchange and timely sharing of strategic information so as to together seek suitable approaches to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Furthermore, he also pledged to continue efforts to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, commensurate with the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
