Flashfloods damaged 43 houses, swept away two others, ruined more than 93ha of paddy rice and 35ha of cassava and inundated nearly 15ha of fish ponds in the district of Nam Po in northern Dien Bien province.
In Nam Po district’s Cha Nua commune, many buildings were plastered with mud, including the headquarters of the communal People’s Committee, the post office and schools. Local authorities estimated the losses at around VND30 billion.
Nguyen Van Thai, chairman of Nam Po district People’s Committee, said the district had evacuated nearly 1,000 locals before the floods hit. Pupils were sent home to ensure their safety.
One person was killed in floods in northern Hoa Binh province, while another person was swept away by floodwaters in Son La province, where 41 houses and 43ha of subsidiary crops were destroyed.
As heavy rains continue to fall, landslides are likely to hit Son La, Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces, especially in mountainous districts, over the next 3-6 hours.
