MPS actively responds to National No Tobacco Week

PSNews – The Ministry of Public Security (MPS) on May 25 held a ceremony in Hospital 19-8 to respond to the World No Tobacco Day (May 31) and the National No Tobacco Week (25 to 31, May).

Lieutenant General Pham Quang Cu, Deputy Director of the General Department of Logistics and Techniques under the Ministry of Public Security, Deputy Head of the Steering Committee for Tobacco Control of MPS chaired the event.

As this year’s World No Tobacco Day is themed “Tobacco and hear diseases”, the World Health Organization (WHO) points out the link between tobacco and heart and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), calls on nations to take timely and effective actions to reduce risks of heart diseases and deaths caused by smoking.

Vietnam is one of the 15 countries with the highest smoking rates in the world, with an adult smoking rate of 47.4%, while two third of Vietnamese women and children are frequently exposed to second-hand smoke at work, at home and at public places.

Therefore, it is necessary to build a non-smoking environment in order to reduce the risks of diseases, create a healthy living environment for non-smoking people, and protect the public health.

Over the past years, the Tobacco Control Board under the Ministry of Health, the WHO and other ministries have supported the Steering Committee for Tobacco Control of the MPS to hold tobacco control activities and implement preventive measures across the public security forces, in a common effort to reduce the need for tobacco use in the community as well as the risks of diseases and deaths caused by tobacco.
