MPS, Chilean National Prosecutor's Office seek to cooperate in crime prevention and control

PSNews - As a member of a high-ranking delegation led by President Luong Cuong to visit the Republic of Chile, Deputy Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General Tran Quoc To had talks with Prosecutor General of the Chilean National Prosecutor's Office Ángel Valencia Vásquez to discuss the establishment and promotion of bilateral cooperation in security and law enforcement, on November 12th, 2024.

At the talks, Deputy Minister Tran Quoc To sincerely thanked Chile for its support of the Vietnam’s cause of fighting for national independence in the past, as well as building and protecting the Fatherland at present, affirming that Vietnam always attaches great importance to promoting a cooperative relationship with Chile, one of Vietnam’s important partners in Latin America.

The Vietnamese official underlined that the visit laid a foundation for cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and the Chilean National Prosecutor's Office in particular and between the two countries in general in the fields of security, and crime prevention and control, contributing to tightening the ties between the two countries as well as promoting peace and security in the region and the world.

Deputy Minister Tran Quoc To underscored that, although the two sides had exchanged criminal information through international organizations such as INTERPOL, the level and scope of the bilateral cooperation had not been commensurate with the potential and strengths of each side.

The guest stressed that, as tourism, trade and investment activities between the two countries are increasing, the two sides need to coordinate more closely in national security and social order protection as well as preventing and combating crime.

For his part, Chilean Prosecutor General Ángel Valencia Vásquez informed the Vietnamese delegation of the current complicated situation of transnational drug-related crime in Latin America in general and in Chile in particular, while expressing his wish to cooperate with the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in combating this type of crime.

On that basis, the two sides reached consensus on stepping up the negotiation and signing of agreements on extradition and transfer of sentenced persons as well as a Memorandum of Understanding on transnational crime prevention and control.

The two sides also agreed to expand law enforcement cooperation, especially in preventing and combating transnational drug trafficking, contributing to safeguarding national security and ensuring social order and safety in each country.

The two head delegates also agreed to increase exchanges of high-level and expert-level delegations, sharing of criminal information, especially information about drug-related crime, as well as jointly organize training and capacity-building programs for law enforcement forces of the two countries on professional expertise as well as foreign languages, aiming to strengthen the law enforcement capacity of the two countries in protecting national security and ensuring legitimate rights and benefits of one country’s citizens in the other country.
