MPS in coordination with Cambodian border force opens campaign to suppress drug crimes along Vietnam-Cambodia border

The Ministry of Public Security (MPS) coordinated with the Ministry of Interior of Cambodia and other Vietnamese functional forces to organize a conference on June 13 in Tay Ninh to launch campaign to suppress drug-related crimes along the Vietnam – Cambodia borderline.

Deputy Minister Le Quy Vuong speaks at the event.

Deputy Minister Le Quy Vuong speaks at the event.

In recent years, the Vietnam – Cambodia borderline saw complex criminal activities, particularly smuggling, gambling and drug-related crimes. Vietnamese criminals coordinated with foreign ones living in Cambodia to form transnational drug trafficking rings. Criminal groups took advantage of easy border-crossing trade between the two countries and weaknesses in patrols and checks of functional forces to transport drugs from the Golden Triangle via Cambodia and Laos to Vietnam and then to a third country.

The MPS of Vietnam had assigned the Investigation Police Department on Drug-related Crimes to coordinate with functional forces of Cambodia on the other side of the shared border to open campaigns to suppress drug crimes and organize law dissemination and mobilize them to participate in drug prevention and combat.

Addressing at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Public Security Le Quy Vuong asked all professional forces under the MPS and Police Departments of the 10 provinces sharing border with Cambodia to improve the operational efficiency of border liaison offices in exchanging information so as to prevent and fight drug trafficking activities along the borderline of Vietnam and Cambodia.

The under-ministerial  agencies and provincial police departments should also mobilize the people living in border areas to heighten their vigilance against tricks of criminals, and actively participate in prevention and fight against drug-related crimes. Finally, Party committees and local authorities of the border provinces should promote the implementation of the Politburo's Directive No. 21 on strengthening leadership over drug prevention and control while raising the role and responsibility of Party committees, authorities at all levels, and mobilizing the power of the political system and the entire population for the fight against drug trafficking.

The police and border guard forces act as the core forces in the fight against drug crimes. All anti-drug operations should also back socio-economic development projects, and contribute to ensuring national defense and security, foreign relations, as well as to consolidating and strengthening grassroots political systems, especially in border communes.
