Public Security mission inspects Lai Chau police’s efforts to overcome flood consequences

PSNews - A working mission of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Rescue in 2018 led by Lieutenant General Pham Quang Cu, Deputy Director of the General Departments of Logistic and Techniques under the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), Deputy Head of the Steering Committee for  Natural Disaster Prevention and Rescue of the MPS on June 26 arrived in Lai Chau to check Lai Chau police force’s work of overcoming flood consequences. 

Over the past few days, the Lai Chau Provincial Police Department has maintained on-duty contingents round the clock to be ready for rescue missions at the localities hit by rains and floods; at the same time, they have been taking active measures to ensure safety for police offices and temporary detention facilities.

The local police units also deployed over 600 police officers and soldiers to evacuate, support and rescue local people and property and ensure traffic order.  Particularly, police units mobilized 18 vehicles, 14 motor boats and canoes and 3 inflatable boats each day for evacuation and rescue missions, and offered 500 life jackets and lifebuoys, 90 packs of medicines to local people.

As of June 26, the flooding has killed 13 people and injured 8 others while 11 people are still missing. 244 houses were collapsed, and 54 houses were swept away. The flood also washed away 50 buffaloes and 5,000 poultries. 68 irrigation constructions were damaged or flown away while 17 power poles were broken down and landslides were caused in many roads. The bridges and roads are also severely damaged. An estimated total property loss is up to 95 billion VND.

Lieutenant General Pham Quang Cu highly appreciated the proactiveness of the Lai Chau Provincial Police Force. He also asked all local police units to take active measures in response to situations, giving a priority to evacuate local people from areas at high risks of floods and landslides while preparing emergency forces and means on request.

All local police units should also coordinate with functional forces to ensure safety for people and property while ensuring social security and order, preventing criminals, and supporting local people in overcoming the consequences of the natural calamities.
