Severe flooding submerges homes across Thua Thien Hue

 During the past two days torrential rain in Thua Thien Hue has left many homes of local residents submerged in flood water and destroyed infrastructure, resulting in chaos affecting the daily lives of residents.

The low-lying communities of Phong Thu, Phong Binh, Phong Hoa, and Phong Chuong in Phong Dien district have been seriously affected by rainfall. Heavy rain has completely paralyzedthe transport system in the area with many roads across Phu Loc district in the communes of Loc Bon, Loc An, Loc Dien, Loc Tri and Phong Hoa becoming isolated as a result of flooding.

Cai Trong Nhu,Chairman of Loc Tri commune People’s Committee,said heavy rain fall between December 9 and 10 flooded many homes and parts of National Highway 1A, causing heavy traffic congestion lasting hours.

In the hamlets of Hoa Mau and Cao Xuan Dai, floodwater also poured into the houses and gardens of residents while roads in the area were severely affected.

Mr Nhu said the communal People’s Committee has mobilized the relevant forces to evacuate residents to safety. So far, one person named Nguyen The Cong, 21 from Huong Tra commune has been confirmed missing after being swept away by floodwater.

In addition to heavy rainfall, water levels in the Huong and Bo rivers have been rising at an alarming rate. A local committee set up for natural disaster search and rescue also sent an urgent telegram to relevant agencies requesting aid to cope with situation.

The Thua Thien Hue province’s Military Command has directed relevant forces to make thorough preparations for the worst-case scenarios.
