Vietnam, Cambodia step up cooperation in combating transnational crime

As a member of a high-ranking delegation accompanying Party General Secretary To Lam on his State visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia, Minister of Public Security General Luong Tam Quang met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of Cambodia Sar Sokha on the afternoon of February 6 in Phnom Penh.

Expressing his pleasure at meeting Minister Luong Tam Quang again, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Sar Sokha congratulated Vietnam on the great success of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, with Minister Luong Tam Quang re-elected to the Politburo for the new term at the 14th National Congress.

The Cambodian high-ranking official highly appreciated the outcomes of cooperation between the Ministry of the Interior of Cambodia and the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in recent years, particularly in the fight against crime.

He expressed his hope that the two ministries would continue to strengthen cooperation in combating organized and transnational crime, especially hi-tech crime, drug-related crime and human trafficking, thereby contributing to a peaceful, secure, safe, stable and developing region.

Thanking Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha for the meeting, Minister Luong Tam Quang emphasized that Party General Secretary To Lam’s State visit to Cambodia was of great significance, as it aimed to elevate Vietnam–Cambodia relations to a new height, creating breakthroughs and promoting deeper and more substantive cooperation between the two countries.

For the cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and the Ministry of the Interior of Cambodia in 2025, Minister Luong Tam Quang and Minister Sar Sokha shared the same view that functional units of the two ministries closely coordinated to ensure security and safety for major political events of each country, as well as for visits of senior leaders of one country to the other.

Regarding cooperation in maintaining social order and safety in each country, the two sides worked together to combat and dismantle numerous online fraud cases and major drug cases, arrested suspects and rescued thousands of victims.

Regarding future cooperation, the two sides agreed to continue effectively implementing the 2026 cooperation plan between the two ministries by strengthening coordination to prevent and combat harmful and toxic information in cyberspace.

They also agreed to soon establish a Joint Working Group on combating transnational crimes, particularly online fraud and drug-related crimes.
