Vietnam, Thailand enhance cooperation in drug prevention and fight

PSNews – The Police Department for Drug-related Crimes under the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security on January 7 held the 13th Vietnam-Thailand bilateral conference on drug prevention and fight cooperation in Phu Quoc District, Kien Giang Province.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Lieutenant General Pham Van Cac, Director of the Police Department for Drug-related Crimes while Mr. Niyom Termsrisuk, Secretary General of the Thailand Narcotics Control Board, headed the Thai delegation.

The conference aimed at reviewing the results of the bilateral cooperation in drug prevention and fight between Vietnam and Thailand, exchanging information and experience and discussing measures to further promote bilateral cooperation in drug prevention and fight between the two sides in the coming time.

In 1998, the Vietnamese and Thai governments signed the Bilateral Agreement on collaboration in drug, precursor substance and psychoactive substance prevention and control. It became a solid legal basis for the two sides to promote cooperation.

In 2019, in implementing the Bilateral Minutes between Vietnam and Thailand signed at the 12

th bilateral conference on drug prevention and fight cooperation in Phuket, Thailand, the two sides coordinated in conducting various drug prevention and fight campaigns, and achieved many important results.

Thanks to the information shared by the Thai side, the Vietnamese successfully discovered several drug-related cases and arrested the suspects.

Vietnam and Thailand have also promoted their strategic partnership in drug prevention and fight. The two countries have always supported each other in multilateral forums, such as the ASEAN Ministerial and Senior Officials Meeting on Drug Matters.

Over the past time, Thailand has also provided Vietnam with funding and equipment for drug prevention and fighting, and organized many professional training courses for Vietnamese officers in charge of drug prevention and fight.

In order to further improve the effectiveness of drug prevention and fight cooperation in the coming time, the two sides agreed to continue to effectively implement the Bilateral Agreement on drug prevention and fight cooperation.

The two sides also agreed to work together to propose Action Plans for the two countries’ relevant forces, implement activities within the framework of the Letter of Agreement on cooperation in law enforcement and drug prevention and fight. 

The two sides also further information sharing and cooperation in fighting against drug-related crimes from afar, especially in controlling precursor substances while continuing to support each other at regional and global cooperation forums.
