Vietnam, UK strengthen cooperation in combating human trafficking

PSNews - In the framework of his visit to the United Kingdom to attend the Vietnam–UK Local-Level Forum on Combating Human Trafficking from June 29 to July 3, Deputy Minister of Public Security Lieutenant General Pham The Tung had a bilateral meeting with Minister of State at the UK Home Office for Border Security and Asylum Angela Eagle on July 1, 2025.

Welcoming Deputy Minister Pham The Tung and the delegation from the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security, Minister Angela Eagle emphasized the significance of the meeting, noting that it would further deepen the Strategic Partnership between the two countries and open up new, practical and effective avenues for future cooperation between the two countries’ relevant agencies.

Deputy Minister Pham The Tung expressed delight that Vietnam–UK relations are positively developing, particularly following the recent visit of Minister of Public Security General Luong Tam Quang to the UK to attend the Border Security Summit.

He noted that functional units under the two ministries have been actively implementing agreements signed by the two ministers, especially the Joint Action Plan on Cooperation in Combating Human Trafficking, and are preparing for the organization of the Local-Level Forum and technical meetings on citizen repatriation, immigration and efforts to combat illegal migration.

During the meeting, delegates intensively discussed approaches to advance the bilateral cooperation in combating the kinds of crimes related to the two countries.

Acknowledging the significant potential for collaboration, particularly in combating transnational crime, human trafficking and illegal migration, the two sides agreed to step up the implementation of signed cooperation documents, including the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Combating Human Trafficking, the MoU on Information Sharing in Immigration and Migration Issues and the Joint Statement of the Third Vietnam–UK Dialogue on Migration and Immigration.

They also agreed to increase the exchange of delegations at various levels, especially at the expert level, to enhance experience sharing, and carry out joint investigations into trafficking and fraudulent asylum networks, ensuring that offenders are promptly brought to justice.

On this occasion, Deputy Minister Pham The Tung called on the UK Home Office to continue to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese citizens legally residing, working and studying in the UK.

He also hoped to expand cooperation with the UK in the areas as strengths of the Home Office, such as its technologies and efforts to counter high-tech crime, financial crime, money laundering, forged passports and fake identification documents.
