Vietnamese students win 38 regional and international Olympiad medals

This year, all 38 students of 7 teams who took part in regional and international Olympiads won medals, including 13 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze medals, according to the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET).

This has been the highest result of Vietnamese students over the years.

Particularly, Nguyen Phuong Thao from the Natural Science High School for Gifted Students under the Hanoi National University got a gold medal at the 2018 International Biology Olympiad (IBO) and very impressively made the highest score out of 261 candidates.

The MoET reported that results of regional and international Olympiads have improved significantly over the past 10 years. From 2009 to 2012, there were around 30 prizes each year with just a few being gold medals. However, since 2013 the total medals have increased to 35-40, even 42 in 2014 and the number of gold medals has also risen to more than 10 each year. Last year, Vietnam bagged 14 gold medals, 7 times higher than 2010 and 2011.

Some teams have achieved high prizes in subjects such as maths, chemistry, physics and informatics.

The MoET attributed the high result to its active adjustment of the national examinations for gifted high-school students, thorough preparations for the Olympiads and preferential policies for medal winners.
