Mytel becomes third largest network operator in Myanmar

After nearly one year operating in Myanmar, Mytel - the trademark of Viettel in Myanmar - has become the 3rd largest network operator in terms of market share.

Mytel has surpassed the milestone of 5.5 million customers on May 9, accounting for over 14% of the mobile market share and ranked 3rd in the telecommunication market. Other large telecoms in the country, namely MPT, Telenor and Ooredoo, took 44.5%, 28.4% and 13% of the market share respectively.

According to a survey by Kantar Media, a UK market research firm, Mytel is the most popular network operator in Myanmar with the Net Promoter Score (NPS) of + 11, while other network operators’ NPS indexes range from - 11 to - 15. This satisfaction index result from Mytel’s good quality 4G network services, cheap rates and good customer care.

Also in May 2019, Open Signal, a reputable company specializing in evaluating telecommunications networks worldwide, announced that Mytel is one of the best and largest 4G coverage networks in Myanmar with an impressive score of 92.9%, while Ooredoo reached 82.3%, Telenor and MPT reached 80%.

In the coming time, Mytel will continue to upgrade its infrastructure, by building 600 base transceiver stations (BTS) and 420 km of transmission cables. Its investment in BTS to ensure that Mytel can cover most of Myanmar's territory, and provide services to even the most remote areas of the country.

In addition to the basic business strategy crafted from the first day of its official operation in Myanmar, Mytel also has different approaches to each locality, creating unexpectedly good results.

Earlier, on April 17, 2016, on the Independence Day of Myanmar, Mytel officially opened its operation at Bang Wa, and became the first network operator in the country to provide telecommunication services to this remote locality.

Bang Wa is an autonomous territory located in Northern Shan State, Myanmar. It shares 133km of border with China. The population of Bang Wa is 558,000 people with a large majority of Chinese language and Wa language – speaking people. Three major telecommunication networks in Wa state are China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile.

After the first 3 hours of its official operation in Bang Wa, Mytel had nearly 100 customers. One week later, the number of its simcards sold and activated in Bang Wa reached 1,400.

In the state, Mytel has 6 BTS and 330km of transmission cable, which is ready to provide full 2G & 4G services for local people. Meanwhile, Mytel in Sagaing also saw a rapid increase in numbers of subscribers.

Although Mytel started official operation on June 9, 2016, it became the first mobile network operator providing with 4G services in the whole country of Myanmar and was also the first company to apply a 1-second block fee.

After 10 days operating, Mytel had more than one million subscribers. With its current more than 5.4 million subscribers, Mytel has become a phenomenon in terms of subscriber growth in the world telecom market. The growth has also been a record among its 11 telecom markets (including Vietnam) that Viettel is doing business in.

In 2019, Mytel aims to reach 8 million subscriber, and earn profit.
