Anti-drowning device made by Vietnamese students

PSNews – Each year, more than 3,000 people die from drowning. Being so concerned about the figure, two students of the Faculty of Science of Can Tho university successfully invented an anti-drowning device.

Dr. Luong Vinh Quoc Danh, Head of the Electronics and Telecommunications Subject of the university told reporters, he remembered that a TV news program once mentioned a high childhood drowning rate. He then discussed the topic with his students (Ma Minh Khoa and Nguyen Ngoc Tai) to think about the case study.

Accordingly, Khoa and Tai developed the idea into their graduation thesis, and brought the project to the contest “Vietnamese creator with Intel Galileo”. Their product has been one of the two projects in the Mekong Delta selected for the final round of the contest, which will be held in January 2017. In the final round, 15 teams across the country will present their projects and answer extra questions from judges.

Khoa shared: “Initially, we faced many difficulties in finding suitable parts for the assembly of the device, such as electromagnetic waves, batteries and microprocessors. After one month, the device was basically completed, and about the testing saw positive results.”

The anti-drowning device includes management and monitoring parts. The management section will be connected and placed approximately 1.5 meters above the ground; the monitoring section will be worn on the kid body. When a kid is submerged in water for 17 - 20 seconds, the management section will alert by ringing bell. Therefore, other people will know and rescue the victim in time.

“In the qualified rounds of the contest, the judges highly valued this device for its practical uses, particularly in cases when children learn how to swim. One company has contacted us to ask for more information about this product. In the future, we will try to develop the anti-drowning device to sell them on the market,” said Khoa.
