Quang Nam Province decides to turn Song Thanh Nature Reserve into national park

PSNews - The Quang Nam Provincial Committee on December 19 decided to turn Song Thanh Nature Reserve into national park, in an effort to protect this beautiful immense primeval forest and hydroelectric reservoir.

Song Thanh Nature Reserve located in Nam Giang and Phuoc Son districts, along the Vietnam–Laos border which spreads over more than 93,000 hectares has advantages of tourism with beautiful immense primeval forest and hydroelectric reservoir.

Specifically, it is divided into 2 areas: a 93,429 hectare core zone; and a 108,398 hectare buffer zone. The core zone is divided into two areas: a preservation only area of 75,373 hectares and an ecological rehabilitating area of 17,512 hectares.

Over 830 species of plants were recorded here during surveys carried out in 1997 and 1999 by the WWF- Indochina and the Institute of Vietnam Forest Investigation Project. Among these species, 23 are considered commercially useful, and 38 species area endangered species recorded in the Red Book of Viet Nam. 

The forest fauna here is also tremendously varied, with 53 species of mammals, 183 species of birds, 44 species of reptiles, 21 species of amphibians and 25 species of fish, many of them endangered Among these are some famous but increasingly rare animals, including tigers, leopards, and elephants.

Recently, the management board has launched a tree-planting campaign to collect timber products to build homes and set up the forest protection force, consisting of two mobile teams and 16 forest protection stations who take responsibility monitoring and controlling deforestation 4-5 days every three times/month.

In addition, Quang Nam Province will offer a new tour bringing visitors through the forest from Khe Ru area to the three-storey fall. Tourists will have a chance to see how rangers dismantle wild animals’ traps from the forest and combat wildlife and forest crime.
