Quang Tri inspects payment of compensation to fishermen

PSNews – Leaders of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee on January 1 paid a working visit to check the current situation of paying compensations to fishermen, who have been affected by the marine pollution incident in the coastal communes of Vinh Linh and Gio Linh district.

As reported, in Gio Linh district, the total compensation of 81 billion VND in the first phase were paid properly for affected 757 ships and over 460 involved locals.

According to reports at the working sessions in Gio Linh district, the local authorities are now conducting a review and evaluation the first phase payment in order to submit to the provincial People's Committee to renew the second phase compensation in accordance with the regulations for fishermen.

In Vinh Linh district, almost all fishermen, affected by the marine pollution incident, have received the compensations, totaling more than 90 billion VND in the two phases while the remaining people have not yet been paid as their declaration files have been either incomplete or false.

To ensure the fairness, transparency and rightfulness in paying compensations, the two districts’ authorities have made public the lists of the beneficiaries and the benefits. A local supervisory board was also established to monitor the process, support and answer questions of people on compensation payment.

The procedures for paying compensations g are being carried out in a quick, convenient and safe way while people can also request for a bank transfer, the reports say.

Speaking at the working sessions, Deputy Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee Ha Sy Dong praised the efforts made by the local authorities in the two districts, who had conducted a timely and proper process of paying compensations for fishermen.

The Deputy Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee then asked the two districts to soon complete the first phase of the compensation payment before this Tet.

Besides, the local authorities should step up information dissemination so that people could understand the provisions on compensations, Ha Sy Dong added.

Regarding inventory aquatic products, local authorities were urged to carry out tests, to detect and destroy poisoned items. The owners of destroyed products may be compensated 30% of the loss.

Quang Tri province so far has granted 3,000 tons of rice to people in coastal areas; more than 12.5 billion of emergency assistance was paid for the fishing vessels owners, affected by the current pollution incident and for fish farmers.

The province also advanced 200 billion VND to the localities so that they could speed up the compensation payment for fishermen, affected by the marine pollution incident.
