Vietnam to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN member countries in combating transnational crime

PSNews – A Ministry of Public Security’s Working Group on cooperation with ASEAN member countries in combating transnational crime was officially established on October 31, under the Decision of General To Lam, Minister of Public Security.

During its first meeting on October 31, Lieutenant General Truong Van Thong, Director of the Foreign Affairs Department under the Ministry of Public Security, who is also the head of the working group, announced the decision of the Minister of Public Security on the group’s establishment.

Lieutenant General Truong Van Thong urged all member of the working group to seriously grasp the direction of the Minister of Public Security on promoting cooperation with regional partners in mitigating challenges threats of transnational crimes to Vietnam’s security and order situation.

Also at the meeting, members of the working group discussed its draft working plan for the period of 2019-2020, taking into account that Vietnam will hold the chairmanship of ASEAN and become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2020.

All members agreed to make efforts to promote the Vietnamese police force’s role in preventing and controlling transnational crimes in the region and world.

Lieutenant General Truong Van Thong suggested that, based on the functions and duties of the working group, all members should carefully study cooperation programs within the ASEAN framework to take further measures to promote cooperation.

Lieutenant General Truong Van Thong called for the establishment of information exchange and information sharing channels and close coordination to effectively fight against transnational crimes.  He also asked to promote foreign language training, skills at international relations and professional expertise for officials of relevant units.
