Honoring contribution of nurses and midwives in the fight against COVID-19

PSNews – The Ministry of Health on May 12 held a ceremony to celebrate the International Nursing Day, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of birthday of Florence Nightingale – the founder of modern nursing.

At the event, Mr. Pham Duc Muc, President of the Vietnam Nurses Association said that the number of nurses and midwives currently account for more than 50% of the healthcare workforce, serving as a pillar of the healthcare system worldwide.

However, according to WHO, during the COVID-19 pandemic, over 300 nurses worldwide died from SARS-CoV-2.

In Vietnam, according to Mr. Luong Ngoc Khue, Head of the Health Ministry's Department of Medical Examination and Treatment, during the fight against the COVID-19 disease, many nurses had to work tirelessly and silently with courage and dedication to save the lives of patients.

Many of them had no days off. They also have to leave their families for months to join hands with other front-line health workers and doctors to fight against COVID-19.

Khue stressed that the nursing team also made very important and effective contributions in the fields of policy development, care management, training, care practice and scientific research.

At the event, Mr. Pham Duc Muc also proposed to the Ministry of Health to soon resolve 5 issues, including the shortage of nursing personnel, the roadmap for the upgrading of qualifications for the domestic nursing force, to meet ASEAN’s standards, and regulation of the scope of professional activities of nursing workers.

Two other issues include the promotion of the working title for the nurse, midwifes and technicians; and the need to increase the number of nurses and midwives holding health management and planning positions.

“The success in COVID-19 prevention and control in Việt Nam is a great achievement of the entire political system and the health sector, in which it is impossible not to mention the great and silent contribution of nurses,” added Muc.
