Revive the largest mangroves lagoon in Southeast Asia

It's been 3 decades since Tam Giang lagoon was devastated, now with the efforts of local government and people, it has gradually revived, become one of the most well-known attractions.

Ru Cha (Huong Phong Commune, Huong Tra town, Thua Thien-Hue) is known as the only remaining pristine mangrove forest in Tam Giang - the largest mangroves lagoon in Southeast Asia. But during the 80s, this mangrove forest once faced the risk of being "wiped out".

Nguyen Loi, a senior in Thuan Hoa village, Huong Phong said, due to the lax management, followed with the lack of awareness in protecting mangrove forest, Ru Cha trees were being cut down mercilessly to get trees for firewood or lands for farming. It led to dangerous erosion, ecological imbalance...

According to Huong Phong Commune People's Committee, after years of trying to protect the forest, Ru Cha forest now remains nearly 5ha with numerous 100-year-old trees. Local people call the forest as a wall to shield storms, flooding and the living environment for shrimp, fish, birds, storks, herons, cauldron ...

One of those models who contributed to the relive of mangrove forests are  Nguyen Ngoc Dap (72 years old, Thuan Hoa village, Huong Phong) and his wife. Realizing that forests without holder is like houses without owner, in 1988, he and his wife voluntarily built a temporary bamboo home within the lagoon area to stay and keep the forests, prevent those who intend to destroy these precious trees... 

30 years have passed since the time Dap and his wife decided to share their life with, every single tree of mangrove forests Ru Cha. Understood the meaningful action of this couple, people in Huong Phong has followed and enhanced the awareness of forest protection, lead to the strong relive of Ru Cha.

Apart from advocating people to preserve and protect Ru Cha, Thua Thien - Hue forest protection branch recently has invested billions VND to plant 10,000 trees on 4,6ha in order to expand the Ru Cha forest to 9ha.

Pham Ngoc Dung, Deputy Head of Thua Thien - Hue forest protection branch said, with the aim to develop mangrove forests along with constructing fisheries model, building sustainable economic for local, the branch will expand the planting area to 10ha by 2017, in order to create residential protecting rings.
