Vietnamese bus assistant uses Facebook to find owner of lost $8,300

A bus assistant in Vietnam has been able to use social media to track down the owner of a fair amount of cash left on his bus.

Nguyen Vo Cuong Bach, a 29-year-old resident in Nghe An Province, stumbled across a wallet containing US$8,300 worth of cash, a driver's license, and an identity card belonging to a passenger on a long-haul bus while cleaning the vehicle on the morning of April 3.

Bach’s typical work day consists of assisting the bus driver with handling customers, storing luggage, collecting fares, and keeping the vehicle clean.

After finding the wallet, Bach published a Facebook post asking for help to find the owner. The post quickly went viral, receiving hundreds of shares and comments.

“I thought he [the owner] was probably carrying the money to pay for his child to go overseas. If I took it, he’d lose it. I’d be happy, he’d be sad. Then, I wouldn’t feel happy after all,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

“I suppose returning the money is the normal thing to do. It’s not a big deal. If it’s not mine, I won’t use it,” he added.

After publishing the post, Ho Van Tung – a 43-year-old man from Nghe An – contacted Bach claiming to have lost the wallet.

Bach then went to meet Tung in person.

Tung said that he and his son realized they had left the wallet on the bus after leaving the terminal in Hanoi.

Worried, they returned to the station only to find that the coach had left.

The money had been saved and borrowed by Tung and his wife to help cover the costs of the necessary documents for their son to work abroad.

“It’s joyful to meet someone as kind as Bach in the face of bad luck,” Tung said.

“Tung offered some thank-you money but I declined. Anyone in my shoes would do the same. If you help others today, others will help you tomorrow,” Bach said.
