Vietnamese Veteran and his “homemade” helicopter

A 60 yo veteran, Bui Hien (Thuan An town, Binh Duong) succeeded in making his helicopter with hope to help local farmers in their lives and protect forest resources.

Understanding difficulties of farmers

Mr. Hien joined the Army and fought in the southwest border war since 1972 and injured. In 1978, he demobilized and chose to live in the lowland southeast region of Vietnam with his family.

One day when he was passing by a rubber farm, he saw a 50 yo man found difficulties trying to spray fungicide on his trees. Hard as the handwork was, the efficiency was not as expected. Farmers also faced health risks posed by such fungicides.

Hien decided to make a mini helicopter that can fly about 20 meters for farmers to spray pesticides or fungicides.

If his plan succeeds, farmers will only have to use at most 2kg of pesticides for each hectare and suffer less health problems. This will also help to save money and time.

Unfortunately, he failed at his first trial due to lack of experience and unexpected errors. Thanks to encouragements given by his family and relatives, he continued his process.

One man called Tuan, who was from the far western region, came to encourage and order his helicopter.

Tuan was in charge of forest protection and his work met numerous difficulties every day. He hoped Hien could succeed so that his work could be accomplished much easier, forest patrol could be conducted timely and with ease. And furthermore, our forests would bleed no more.

Difficulties in researching

Mr. Hien recalled his first helicopter was invented in late 2013, after 3 years of hard research and trials. He spent 3 more years to perfect his “Dream” (Giac Mo) helicopter.

“At first sight, everyone might say it was unsafe and prevent me from getting on it. They just worried about my safety, I understand. However, I made it and I know it. I am going to be the first one to operate it”, shared Hien.

He learned to steer the helicopter from various sources, even asked for assistance and guidance from professional and experienced pilots.

In more than half a year, he practiced regularly on his plane in a small space, from taking off to other relating moves.

By practicing, he identified all shortcomings and timely fixed them.

He has been completing all necessary documents for allowance by Ministry of National Defense.

As shared by a law expert, although Hien’s dedicated work and talents had been known and widely praised by the public, he might face certain legal issues.

Granting permission or license for any vehicle is under strict regulations, particularly a helicopter, which is supposed to meet various safety and technical standards.

Strict regulations may partly discourage one’s ambition or creativity.

We do hope that authorities at all levels will facilitate citizens to create and invent, especially in their very first trials.

It is appreciated that timely advise and favorable conditions be made to register intellectual property and apply successful projects in practice, contributing to development of our country.
