Nearly half million email addresses and passwords of Vietnamese users leaked

PSNews - Up to 437,666 Vietnamese users have let out their email passwords when accessing social networks and online services, according to the Vietnam Computer Emergency Response Team (VNCERT).

By tracking down cyber-crashes, VNCERT has detected a large number of email accounts and passwords have come out when the users visited social networks and online services such as Bitcoin, Pastebin, LinkedIn., MySpace, Netflix, Last.FM, Zoosk, Badoo, RedBox ...

Of the more than 1.4 billion exposed accounts, VNCERT said, 437,664 accounts have belonged to users in Vietnam, including 930 e-mail addresses ending at “gov.vn” most likely to be of governmental officials, and many others from big Vietnamese businesses.

With the stolen information, hackers can control the accounts and use them for attacking other individuals and organizations, stealing data from agencies and businesses or doing bad things.

To reduce such risks, VNCERT suggested agencies, organizations and enterprises take effective prevention measures by enhancing password security with multi-layer authentication, using strong passwords and changing them regularly.

VNCERT also recommended that individuals should not use business email accounts to sign up for personal accounts on social networks, online services.

When agencies, organizations and enterprises detect incidents but are unable to handle them, they should immediately contact VNCERT by calling numbers 04 3640 4423; 0869 100319/ 0888 609399 or reporting the case at e-mail address: ir@vncert.gov.vn.
