Vietnam, Canada seek to strengthen cooperation in security and law enforcement

Within the framework of his working visit to Canada, Deputy Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General Le Quoc Hung held bilateral meetings and dialogues with Canadian law enforcement agencies from September 8 to 10 in Ottawa.

Accordingly, Deputy Minister Le Quoc Hung and the high-ranking delegation of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam had separate meetings with Deputy Minister of Public Safety Canada Daniel Mills, President of the Canada Border Services Agency Erin O’Gorman, and representatives from Global Affairs Canada, Public Safety Canada, the Border Services Agency and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

During the time, the two sides had 10 consecutive sessions, discussing a wide range of key cooperation areas, such as combating human trafficking and illegal migration, cybersecurity and hi-tech crime, counter-narcotics efforts, prison management and rehabilitation, consular affairs and other fields of mutual concern.

Speaking at the sessions, Deputy Minister Le Quoc Hung underlined that cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and Canadian partner agencies had yielded many positive results in recent years, particularly in training, capacity building, crime prevention and immigration management.

He suggested that the competent agencies of both countries continue to effectively implement agreed  cooperation contents while considering the establishment of a regular exchange and review mechanism in line with the Vietnam–Canada Comprehensive Partnership, in the coming time.

Deputy Minister Daniel Mills expressed appreciation for the working visit of Deputy Minister Le Quoc Hung and the Vietnamese delegation to Canada, noting that it was the first visit of a senior leader of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam to Canada. 

He stressed that the visit created a premise for the two sides to hold regular meetings to review and evaluate their cooperation outcomes as well as to set orientations for their future collaboration.

He affirmed that, immediately after the visit, Canadian law enforcement agencies would work closely and actively with the Ministry of Public Security’s focal agencies to promptly implement the agreed cooperation contents of mutual concern.
